         The 1950 Mercury had very few changes from the previous year, consisting of minor upgrades to the grill and badging. Though the vehicles were essentially the same, Mercury did have some big events happen in 1950. A Mercury was chosen for the first time as a pace car in the Indianapolis 500. A yellow two-door Mercury convertible led the cars to the start of the race. Not long after the race, Mercury produced its one millionth car, a four-door sedan.
         The 1949-51 Mercury quickly became popular with the car customizers in the early 1950s. The Barris Brothers, California car builders, were some of the first to reshape the Mercury. Bob Hirohata asked them to customize the new 1951 Mercury for the movie Rebel Without a Cause, and giving the car a definite "cool" image.
