         The 1953 Cadillac styling was a continuation of the well-received 1949 vehicles. The cars kept evolving, with newer accessories and minor body changes. The 1953 Cadillac receive the "bomb" style bumper guards, the headlights had slight overhangs (eyebrows), and the rear window was now a one-piece curved glass. This was also the first year Cadillac was using a twelve-volt electrical system. There was a greater need for more power, considering all the accessories offered, including power windows and seats, heating and air conditioning systems, signal-seeking radios, power steering, "Autronic Eye" headlight dimmers, and windshield washers.
         A fire destroyed GM's Hydra-Matic transmission plant in Livonia, Michigan, on August 12th, 1953. This was the only plant producing the transmission, which forced GM to use the Buick Dynaflow as a replacement. The changeover slowed down production, also affecting Kaiser and Nash, since they also used the transmission.
