1954 Mercury Monterey Station Wagon
Engine: OHV V-8
Displacement: 256 Cubic Inches
Horsepower: 161 BHP
Cost New: $2,776
1954 was the 15th anniversary of Mercury, and this was the year they launched a new, modern overhead valve V-8 along with a newly upgraded suspension and some unique styling features. While it was based on the new Ford Y-block, the Mercury version had a larger piston bore, leading to a greater displacement and more horsepower. The suspension was given new ball joints that gave the vehicles better handling and a smoother ride. They also released a Sun Valley 2-door hardtop, an upgrade to Ford's Crestliner, with a tinted Plexiglas roof.
The most expensive of the Mercurys was the woody station wagon. The first 356 of the 11,656 wagons had real wood siding, while the remainder, like the one here, were fitted with simulated wood made of fiberglass and covered with D-Noc decals.
