1959 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty Special

Horsepower: 325 BHP
Cost New: $6,233
General Motors redesigned the entire line for 1959, and Cadillac was no exception. From the largest GM tail fins to the new and more powerful motors, the Cadillac was the "Standard of the World!" The most obvious change was the tail fins. Starting at the C-pillar, they rose gracefully to a high point, directly above the rear bumper. The new rear twin taillights had a bullet shape, and the bumper ends were squared off to look like a jet engine exhaust. The new grill and insert above the rear bumper had the jewel-like appearance from the previous year.
The new drive train, boasting an all-new 390 CID engine, producing 325 horsepower, gave the car plenty of power to go with the elegant new design. The interiors offered every luxury available at the time, including air conditioning, tinted glass and all power windows, door locks and front seats. The suspension was upgraded to provide a smoother ride and better handling.
In the years since 1959, Cadillac has come to represent everything the decade held for America. From the glitter of the chrome to the larger-than-life tail fins to the gadgets and luxury inside, Cadillac was the icon for what America was striving for. It was a truly fitting end to the decade.
