The most interesting part of Santo Domingo is its historic monuments. The oldest is believed to be the Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), circa 1500. The old photos were taken around 1920, before its restoration in 1947. Few tourists get to see it because it is on the East side of the Ozama River on private property.

At the west end of El Conde is the El Conde Gate, part of the old city wall. It is now the entrace to Independence Park, where the mausoleum of the founding fathers of the country is. Here is where Duarte, Sanchez, and Mella declared independence for the Dominican Republic in 1844.

Columbus loved this island of Hispañola so much he wanted to be buried here. His remains were brought from Spain and buried in the Cathedral. This mausoleum was built after his remains were found hidden in the Cathedral.

After visiting the cathedral, you may want to have dinner at my favourite restaurant nearby. "La Bricciola" is a beautiful colonial home that was converted into a restaurant.

My photos are a little too dark, but they attempt to capture the dining atmosphere. Photos don't let you taste their piña colada!
